Converting Between Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers
To convert an improper fraction to a mixed number, divide the numerator by the denominator. The whole-number answer becomes the whole part and the remainder becomes the new numerator. 11/4 gives 2 remainder 3, so it is 2¾.
The two forms
An improper fraction has a numerator bigger than its denominator, like 11/4. It looks top-heavy, but there is nothing wrong with it — "improper" is a historical label, not a criticism.
A mixed number writes the same amount as a whole number and a fraction: 2¾.
They are equal. Which one you use depends on what you are doing with it.
Improper to mixed — divide
Divide the numerator by the denominator and keep the remainder.
For 11/4: 11 ÷ 4 = 2 remainder 3.
The 2 becomes the whole number. The remainder 3 becomes the new numerator. The denominator does not change.
So 11/4 = 2¾.
Mixed to improper — multiply and add
Going the other way, multiply the whole number by the denominator, then add the numerator.
For 2¾: 2 × 4 = 8, plus 3 = 11. Keep the denominator, giving 11/4.
You can check it by dividing back. If 11 ÷ 4 returns you to 2 remainder 3, the conversion was right.
Which form to use when
Use improper fractions while you are calculating. Multiplication and division only work properly on improper fractions, and addition and subtraction avoid the borrowing problem entirely.
Use mixed numbers for final answers and anything practical. "Two and three quarter cups" is instantly meaningful; "eleven quarter cups" is not.
A common workflow is to convert everything to improper fractions at the start, do all the work, then convert back at the very end.
The negative mixed number trap
This one catches almost everyone at least once.
−2¾ means −(2 + ¾), which is −2.75. It does not mean −2 + ¾.
So when converting to an improper fraction, convert the positive version first and then apply the minus: 2¾ is 11/4, so −2¾ is −11/4.
Getting this wrong gives −5/4, which is −1.25 — a long way from −2.75.
When the division comes out exactly
If the numerator divides evenly, there is no fractional part at all. 12/4 = 3, written as a plain whole number.
And if the remainder shares a factor with the denominator, simplify it. 14/4 gives 3 remainder 2, so 3 2/4 — but 2/4 simplifies to ½, so the tidy answer is 3½.
